Members of the West Grove Fire Company took part in assisting the Fred S. Engle Middle School with its annual 8th grade science project known as the "Egg Drop."
Each student was asked to create a package that could protect an egg from breaking after being dropped from various heights. Without using an egg crate, student teams had to design and build a protective package that was to be no larger than a coffee can.
The various packages were dropped from various heights. Teams tested their designs by seeing if the egg survived a drop off of a desk, from a height in a stairwell, and, then, from the roof of the gym, the team's design was then eligible for the final round: to be dropped off the tip of the ladder truck.
There were about 18 survivors from each class team that made it to the final round. Some designs used nerf footballs, ziploc baggies stuffed with marshmallows, plastic containers lined with packing peanuts, and cotton balls, just to name a few. Some dropped gently to the ground, while others smacked and shattered!
This annual event encourges students to think about science and design, but in a way in which everyone has fun. An enjoyable time by everyone! |
