West Grove Fire Company firefighters were called to assist the Avondale Fire Company at a chimney fire that became even more involved in Franklin Township on Monday.

The original dispatch requested Ladder 22 to assist Avondale for a chimney fire, with reports of fire from the chimney and a smoke-filled attic. Enroute the call was upgraded to a house fire until the source of the smoke could be determined. That dispatch added units from other areas fire companies.

Arriving units found that fire had extended beyond the chimney into spaces behind walls and between floors. That required firefighters to open up these spaces to find the seat of fire, with extensive work required to get into hidden areas, including behind a stone wall. Crews were on scene for approximately three hours.
