New members and junior members went through a class in both Vehicle Rescue and Emergency Medical first aid. Vehicle rescue training included stabilizing the vehicle with wooden blocks (called "cribbing") as well as newer stabilizing technology - the AUTO CRIB-IT™ tool. To extricate someone from a vehicle whose door will not open due to damage, new members learned how to safely break glass, cut glass, and use the Jaws Of Life® rescue tool to remove a door. Emergency medical training focused on stabilizing the neck of a car crash victim to prevent further injury. Stabilizing the neck is referred to as stabilizing the cervical spine (or "c-spine" for short). Another focus was keeping the injured person from moving (and potentially worsening injuries) by securing them to a backboard.

West Grove Fire Company is very fortunate to have new volunteers who will give up their time to learn these skills, and we are always looking for additional members to join us as well. Volunteering with West Grove Fire Company is not limited to firefighting/rescue, or emergency medical services; we also have non-operational members providing all types of assistance using their time, and any skills they may already have, for fund raising, public education, grant writing and maintenance for example.
