Busy Wednesday for WGFC Fire & EMS

March 24, 2023

West Grove Fire Company resources were busy on Wednesday, March 22 with calls throughout the period for both firefighters and EMTs.

On the fire side, firefighters were first called just before 1:30pm to assist the Avondale Fire Company 23 on an aircraft down incident at the New Garden airport. 911 callers reported that an aircraft had crashed on approach to the runway. Initial responding units found that a plane had struck electric lines along Newark Road, then wound up in a field short of the runway. The downed lines started a field fire, with scene commanders requesting Brush 22 from the WGFC to assist. The Brush and Engine 22-2 responded.

Fortunately, the brush fire was quickly contained, and, even more fortunately, the plane's occupants were able to walk away from the incident without injuries.

Less than one hour later, at 220pm, the WGFC was requested to assist the Longwood Fire Company along with units from across southern Chester County on a fire in the Giant shopping center on Baltimore Pike. A restaurant there had a fire that was initially contained by a sprinkler system, with units assigned to check for fire extension. WGFC's Ladder 22 and Engine 22-2 made responses to the fire scene, with Ladder 22 setting up its aerial ladder at the front of the building so crews could inspect the roof area.

During the Longwood incident, the Union Fire Company of Oxford was dispatched for a brush fire on Homeville Road in Upper Oxford Township. Command there requested additional brush units and ATVs, with Brush 22 being dispatched at 2:40pm. The Brush and Engine 22-2 responded, with the Engine coming from the fire scene in Longwood. WGFC firefighters assisted 21 units with a brush fire throughout the woods.

Additionally, during the full day period, WGFC EMS units were dispatched 11 times, starting at 2:27am continuing throughout the day, and with four dispatches occurring between 3:00pm and 4:41pm.
