Farm Equipment Fire London Grove

November 1, 2024

A large farm combine suffered an engine compartment fire in a corn field in London Grove Township on Thursday, October 31.

The West Grove Fire Company responded to handle the mid-day incident with units dispatched for a harvesting combine on fire to the rear of a home on North Gurnsey Road, north of Lloyd Road. Engine 22-1 arrived to find a large John Deere combine whose operator reported a fire in the engine compartment which is located on the top of the large tractor. The crew deployed an 1-3/4" attack line from the Engine's bumper to extinguish that fire.

In addition, a small fire had been started in the corn field, with firefighters deploying a 300' attack line from Engine 1 to handle that assignment. Additional WGFC units assisted, with Brush 22 heading out into the corn field to assist, and units laying a supply line from Gurnsey Road in case additional water was needed at the scene which was about 150 yards from the Roadway.

Fortunately, given very dry conditions, the fire in the field and combine did not spread. WGFC units Engine 22-1, Engine 22-3, Engine 22-2, Tanker 22, ambulance and fire police were on scene for about 90 minutes. Given the size of farm combines, and Engine and Tanker from 23 were also requested, and we thank our partners in Avondale for their assistance on scene. The WGFC also thanks the PA State Police, whose troopers assisted first responders.
