Second Barn Fire on the Same Day -- This Time in West Nottingham

December 6, 2024

After spending most of Thursday at a New London barn fire, West Grove Fire Company first responders (and those from neighboring companies) were sent to a second barn fire late on Thursday evening.

Dispatched at 9:30pm to assist the Union Fire Company of Oxford, the WGFC was requested initially for a tanker and ladder for a fire on Lees Bridge Road in West Nottingham Township. WGFC responded with Ladder 22, Tanker 22, and Engine 22-3. Also responding were units from Rising Sun, Robert Fulton, Avondale, and Quarryville Fire Companies as additional tankers were added to the assignment.

As the incident developed, the nearby doublewide mobile home became involved, with firefighters dealing with the barn, the burning hay, and the mobile home. A water supply operation was established with six tankers used to shuttle water from a hydrant at the Wawa at Route 272 and Route 1 several miles from the scene. Cold temperatures created icy conditions for this operation, with the local township salting the roads to help firefighters at the water supply operation.

Units cleared the scene around midnight. (Thanks to the Union Fire Company of Oxford for these photos).
