A car struck a guardrail and wound up on the side of a large building along Route 796 in Penn Township this afternoon. One person was transported to Christiana Hospital.
WGFC was originally dispatched at about 1:30pm for a car accident near 796 and Pennocks Bridge Road. The responding WGFC Ambulances could not find an accident at that location, so they traveled south on 796 and found an SUV up against the building on the east side of the road. Engine 22-1 and Rescue 22 had also responded and went on location as well. After initial contact with the driver, the call was upgraded to include ALS (advanced life support) and Medic 94 was added to the assignment.
The mid-sized SUV had struck the guiderail alongside the roadway, and the resulting force of the crash turned the vehicle onto its nose and rotated the vehicle behind the guiderail where it struck a mushroom processing building. The crash resulted in the destruction of a large HVAC unit and a sizable hole in the cinderblock wall.
The driver was assisted from the vehicle by WGFC personnel, and ultimately transported by WGFC Ambulance along with Medic 94 to the hospital. Crews from West Grove, including Engine 22-3 which also arrived, assisted the PA State Police, and made sure the structure would be sound after the vehicle was removed from the building. Officials from Penn Township were also notified to come to the scene given the damage to the building.
WGFC Fire Police had Route 796 closed from near the school complex at Leedum Run Road, and on the north side at the Pennocks Bridge Road intersection.
The tow company removed the vehicle and WGFC crews cleared the scene approximately an hour after dispatch. |
