A crash closed Route 896 - New London Road late Sunday evening, sending three people to the hospital.
West Grove Fire Company firefighters and EMTs were dispatched, along with Medic 94, for an accident with reported entrapment at 11:21pm. Reports indicated a three vehicle crash with one subject trapped in an overturned vehicle.
West Grove responded with two ambulances, Engine 22-1 from West Grove, Rescue 22 from New London, and Engine 22-3 from the London Britain station less than 1/2 mile from the crash scene. Ambulance 22-1 and Engine 22-3 arrived on the scene and reported three vehicles with one overturned, just south of the intersection of Flint Hill Road.
Responders found damaged vehicles spread over 400 yards of roadway. A heavily damaged SUV was struck head on in the northbound lanes. 100 yards further south, firefighters found the second vehicle overturned just off the southbound side of the roadway. A third vehicle, also damaged on the drivers side was located another 250 yards further south. Debris from the crashed vehicles littered the highway throughout the scene. While there were initial reports of a subject trapped in the overturned vehicle, the driver managed to get out of the vehicle.
Firefighters and EMTs worked to assess injuries in all three vehicles. Crews worked to secure any hazards and started a long process to clear the roadway of glass and debris. Both West Grove ambulances and a third ambulance from Avondale fire company transported patients to Christiana Hospital.
WGFC fire police had Route 896 closed at Flint Hill and Stricklersville roads throughout the incident. WGFC crews cleared the scene after just over an hour and 15 minutes after dispatch. |
