West Grove Fire Company's annual fall fire prevention program in area schools and daycare facilities is underway.
Last week, crews visited Assumption BVM School on State Road in London Grove Township. Students from several grades were given a chance to learn about WGFC fire trucks outside and then got a fire safety demonstration inside the school. "Firefighter Lisa" explained important fire safety lessons, like Stop, Drop, and Roll, and having a home fire safety plan, and all about smoke detectors, to dozens of students. Students saw Firefighter Lisa don her complete set of turnout gear and breathing equipment so they would not be scared when they see firefighters in an emergency.
Each year, WGFC presents fire safety lessons to thousands of area school children as part of a renowned fire safety program recognized for WGFC's commitment to reaching people of all ages with important and potentially life-saving information. The programs are engaging for children of all ages. School visits take place throughout October, and are part of WGFC's participation in national fire safety campaigns which are coordinated around Fire Safety Week October 9-15th.
About Fire Prevention Week Since 1922, the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance, making it the longest-running public health observance in our country. During Fire Prevention Week, children, adults, and teachers learn how to stay safe in case of a fire. Firefighters provide lifesaving public education in an effort to drastically decrease casualties caused by fires.
Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage. This horrific conflagration killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres of land.
