As WGFC units were backing into quarters very early Saturday morning at the West Grove, New London and London Britain stations from an earlier automatic alarm in Franklin Township, Chester County 911 Center dispatchers were calling with another emergency. This time it was a reported small brush fire also in Franklin Township.
Engine 22-3 responded just before 100am, along with Brush 22 and Engine 22-1 quickly. A caller said there was a 6' X 6' area burning near the intersection of Route 841 and Flint Hill Road. Nearby Engine 22-3 soon discovered that the call was actually in London Britain Township along Flint Hill Road just north of the bridge near Mercer Mill Road. Coming down Flint Hill, the Engine crew noted a large volume of fire, and arrived to find a 100' X 40' section of brush and marsh grass burning, with flames well above the height of the engine and spreading toward the creek.
The crew deployed a 1-3/4" preconnected attack line from the bumper of the engine, quickly knocking down the bulk of the fire. The crew began working along the edge to burning area to extinguish pockets of fire, as Engine 22-1 arrived. That crew pulled a line off the back of Engine 22-3 and continued to wet down the fire area. Fire fighters arriving on Brush 22 also assisted in finding and dousing hot spots. Engine 22-1 supplied 1000 gallons of water to Engine 22-3 to assist in fire suppression. Some 1,600 gallons of water were used at this incident.
WGFC units were clear of the incident in about 40 minutes.
