August 28, 2023

Firefighters from the West Grove Fire Company and area departments were dispatched for a fire in a garage in the area of the intersection of Routes 41 and 841 in London Grove Township Sunday afternoon just before 3:30pm.

Multiple callers to Chester County's 911 Center reported smoke and fire in Chatham, resulting in a dispatch of the West Grove, Avondale, Cochranville, and Longwood fire companies. WGFC responded with Engine 22-1, Tanker 22, Ladder 22, Engine 22-2, the ambulances and fire police. An additional call was made for water tankers given the area is not served by fire hydrants. First responders arriving on scene reported a well involved shed burning on London Grove Road northeast of the highway intersection.

Engine 22-1 was the first arriving engine, arriving just eight minutes after dispatch and laying a 5" water supply line from the intersection of Routes 41 and 841 up London Grove Road toward the fire scene, and deploying an 1-3/4" attack line. The engine was supplied by Tanker 22 which arrived. Within about five minutes, the initial attack line had the bulk of the fire knocked down, which minimized damage to an adjacent home. The overall fire was declared under control in about 15 minutes after arrival.

Units from area fire companies arrived to assist Engine 22-1 in extinguishment and overhaul. Tankers from Cochranville, Avondale and Po-Mar-Lin (Unionville) were in line to support the fire scene, with about 5,000 gallons of water used for this fire scene. The shed was a total loss, with some damage to the home.

During the incident, WGFC was dispatched for a second emergency at 3:46pm, with reports of an auto accident with entrapment in front of the old Jennersville Hospital. Engines 23-1 and 25-2 left the fire scene to respond to this incident, with units from the Union Fire Company of Oxford (21) dispatched along with Medic 94.

Units reported a two-vehicle crash with one overturned. One patient was confined, and fire personnel worked to quickly extricate the patient who was transported by Ambulance 21-1 to the hospital.

An additional EMS call in West Grove was also handled during these two other emergencies, one of eight EMS calls on Sunday. WGFC fire units had also handled a carbon monoxide incident on Chambers Way in West Grove at 1:45pm the same afternoon.
