Units from the West Grove Fire Company were called to assist Longwood and Kennett Square on three separate house fires over the holiday period. The WGFC was part of a large contingent of fire companies assisting on these working fires, with units from multiple counties involved in the fire fights.
The first fire was on Saturday afternoon at 2:14pm in Kennett Township. WGFC was initially called for a RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) assist for a house on fire at 256 Old Kennett Road. Ladder 22 responded assisting Kennett Square 24, along with units from Longwood 25, Avondale 23, Po-Mar-Lin 36, Hockessin 19, Concordville 59, West Bradford 39, West Chester 52, Oxford 21, Bart Township 51 and county fire marshals. Ultimately, Tanker 22 was called as part of a tanker task force and Engine 22-1 also assisted.
The second fire was on Monday just after 8am, with reports of garage on fire, attached to a home also in Kennett Township. Again, Ladder 22 was called for the RIT assignment, but was immediately pressed into service to ladder the roof, with WGFC crews assisting in the fire fight. Tanker 22 and Squad 22 also responded. On this call to assist Longwood 25, WGFC joined with units from Concordville 59, Po-Mar-Lin 26, Kennett Square 24, Hockessin 19, Cranston Heights 14, West Chester 51, Cochranville 27, Avondale 23, Christiana 52, Bart 51 and county fire marshals. The call was on Walnut Valley Road, with crews saving much of the main house, with significant damage to the garage and a bedroom above.
The third fire was the day after Christmas when Longwood and Po-Mar-Lin units were dispatched for a house fire at 506 Beechwood Drive in East Marlborough Township. In this call, the 911 Center reported a fully involved fire in the garage attached to the house. As in the previous fires, the WGFC was requested for a RIT activation and then requested to assist in the firefight and on the tanker task force. To assist Longwood, Ladder 22, Tanker 22, Engine 22-2 and Engine 22-1 responded along with units from Po-Mar-Lin, Kennett Square, Cochranville, East Bradford, West Chester and Concordville.
The strong working mutual aid working relationships among southern Chester County area fire departments were very much on display at these two incidents. |
