Driver and Dog Rescued in London Grove Entrapment

April 5, 2026

A car came off the US Route 1 Bypass on the northbound side in London Grove Township and wound up almost on its roof with the driver and a dog trapped inside.

West Grove first responders were dispatched at 2:45pm Sunday for the call, along with units from Medic 94 and Avondale Fire Company for the call with reported entrapment on the Bypass just north of Route 41. State Police reported subjects trapped.

Engine 22-1 and Ambulance 22-2 arrived quickly to find a car off the roadway and began stabilization of the vehicle, requesting a second ambulance from Avondale. Once stabilized using rescue struts, crews from Engine 1, Ladder 22, and an engine from Avondale used battery powered rescue tools (known commonly as the Jaws of Life) to "flap the roof," folding the roof down to allow the driver and dog to be removed. Extrication came quickly at the 13 minute mark after dispatch. Crews placed the dog into Engine 22-1, and send the patient to the hospital in Ambulance 22-2. The dog was transported to Station 22 on Engine 1 to await pickup by family friends.

Meanwhile, fire police from West Grove and Avondale managed traffic along busy Route 1 and the entrance to the Bypass from Route 41. Crews remained on scene to assist with traffic control for approximately 30 minutes. This was the third entrapment dispatch for the company less than 24 hours.
